If the knock sensor triggers it will shut down. You might get warning lights when overheating (say at 240 to 250 F) but no "safety shutdown", at least not until it starts knocking badly. So if you're overheating, turn the engine off, don't wait for it to shutdown on it's own, by that point it may be too late.
My son said the engine rapidly lost power and died. Started back up fine and I have resolved the coolant leak and changed the oil (always synthetic). The magnet on the end of the oil drain plug had no metal debris. I'm really shocked that there is apparently no engine damage. Thanks for the quick reply
That's good to hear, and it always pays to check oil for contamination.
