ABS brake issue
Asked by o2_Silverado Aug 27, 2009 at 10:41 PM about the 2002 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 RWD
Question type: Maintenance & Repair
I recently experienced ABS tripping when braking under normal conditons in my 02 1500 2 wheel drive. The brakes would pulsate and the pedal would vibrate under my foot, this tells me its abs issue. But I have not thrown a MIL or ABS light.
Here is what I have done so far to try and fix it.
New rotors and pads (it needed done anyway).
I cleanded the front wheel speed sensors, and finally replaced the worse looking one which was the passanger side.
Still nothing works. What else could it be. and are there other ways to troubleshoot since I dont have a code.

Update, I also pulled the ABS fuse to disable. But I still had the braking problem.
i dont know what the problem is. my dads gmc 2500 99 suburban dose the same thing. try using yahoo answers
you could try replacing the abs line or senser
just cause there new rotors doesn't mean they are straight they can still be warped happens to me a lot i'm a tech at a chevy dealership

I am having abs brakes lock-up on me while driving, what can I do to fix this problem and turn off abs light and safely drive this 1500 Silverado.
It could be your hub also that's what's wrong with my truck
The aftermarket Chevy (non-OEM) rotors were know to have issues with fitment, causing the pads to ride on the hub of the rotor causing all kinds of fun issues, ultimately leading the catastrophic brake failure. Have you checked to make sure the pads aren't riding on the hub portion of the rotor?
Also, I had lots of issues with both Chevy Tahoe/Suburbans I owned and front brake pulsing issues. Seems like it only took one time of emergency braking to cause issues that immediately lead to brake pulsing.
I had the same thing on my 2003 GMC Sierra. One of my hubs went out and I replaced it and that fixed the braking problem you’re talking about
I have a 2001 Suburban and had the brake flutter and hard pedal at low speed (under10mph) but no ABS light. I changed the ABS wheel speed sensors (both front) noting that the original sensors had shims between the sensor and the wheel hub assembly. That did not solve the problem. Brake booster, master cylinder, ABS modulator and an ABS module later, I took the shims out from under the wheel speed sensors and problem solved. If you are having the same issue, look to that solution first before you spend an assload of money.
Drain all the brake fluid put new in fluid in it.
sounds like this recall notice https://www.consumeraffairs.com/recalls04/2005/gm_abs.html
1996 Gmc sierra 1500 4x4..same issue.. Pulsing from abs. In the shop. I read that a lot of these issues to poor ground on the Abs control module. I'm planning to pass that info on to the tech.
having the same issue on my 03 sierra 1500 as well. replaced rotors, pads, hub w/speed sensor and also some break lines and still does it. im about to burn this truck down and get a dodge LOL.

The 1999 thru 2007 used Hall effect sensors integral with the wheel hub assembly on all four wheels except for the WT version, which used Hall effect sensors only on the front wheels and a sensor on the drive shaft for the rear wheels. Check to ensure that a 1.2 to 1.5V pulse is generated with wheel rotation; this can be measured by connecting the sensor to an oscilloscope. My 2002 Sierra 1500 gave no dash panel warning of the sensor failures. My experience: At 36k miles and after an estimated 2 mph on-purpose accident (to keep from going over the edge of a parking garage on the 3rd level deck), both front wheel sensors on my 2002 GMC Sierra 1500 were found clean and without corrosion but only putting out 0.2V. The dash panel ABS never lighted (but always did momentarily when starting the truck). The ABS only activates between 3 and 9 mph and no motion is detected from a wheel. (Mine activated when no motion was detected from either front wheel, (bad sensors), and apparently pumped so much fluid quickly to the rear brakes that the calipers jammed the pads, preventing any braking.)
