chevy silverado light duty single cab 1500 4x4 choking out when you accelerate

Asked by Brandon Jan 16, 2017 at 06:53 AM about the 2002 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Just bought the truck from someone and
when you go to push the gas it wants to
choke out and die....it idols great but just
dies the second you touch the gas pedal had
2 cylenoids changed in it the mechanic told
me the problem is now that it needs a new
ignition switch and that's the reason it's
doing it? I felt like he's playing guessing
games with my money...auto zone told me
it's the cat, however it's got a good flow of
exhaust coming out but it smells rich like
fuel...seen some videos that says it's
possibly eiather spark plugs and wires or
mass air flow sensor? Does anyone know
what it is for sure before I go broke trying to
diagnose the problem my self as a
diagnostics isn't pulling it up!?!

I doubt the ignition switch is causing your problem. All the other fixes are a possibility. I know you have no check engine light but you want it scanned for any. I would have the fuel pressure check, it could be the mass flow, or the catalytic. You can pressure test the exhaust system, see below. The O2 sensor can cause what happening. Or a simple as a good tuneup, you don't say how many miles and it may be time for plugs and wires anyway...

Well it is not the ignition switch. No codes, so it has to be a fuel issue, or the plugged cat if so, you can check that in the dark, have the vehicle warmed up, revving it what you can and look at the cat. closest to the exhaust manifolds, if they were plugged they would have an orange glow to them. Ya, the mass air flow sensor should be cleaned along with the throttle body. I need to know the engine size for further investigation.
