The gear shifter moves through all the gears. Engine will not crank. Nsbu is the neutral safety switch

All other dash lights come on. When I turn the key to start all gear indicator lights go out. When I shift through gears it doesn't show what gear I'm in just displays the gears with not box around them.

having the same problem with my 2009 chevy avalanche. My engine will start, but when I try to put it in gear or reverse or anything it doesn't register on the readout and doesn't actually select any gear. WTF?

Ryyoung33 you most have forgot to plug in the transmission range sensor when you swapped the engine. Others having these problem most likely have a faulty transmission range sensor. You can reset them to try to fix them. Undo the positive on the battery then unplug both wires going into the parking netural sensor wait 10 minutes put on the postive to the battery wait 10 mins then plug it back in. Will reset and many times fix the problem. Warning the plugs can be extremely hard to get off. You can pry with a screw driver but do not hit the end of the screw driver not even with your hand or you will break the sensor.

Use a heat gun to remove the plugs on the neutral safety switch (NSBU). I spent some time but finally got them off with some LOW heart. There is a glue of some sort on the plugs

Has anyone ever solved Ryyoung33's original issue of no start no shift indicator? I have the exact issue on 2006 Yukon XL. The dash lights for PRND321 are on, but there's no square around any of them so no indication to the driver which gear is selected no matter which position the shift lever is in...and turning the key to start does not crank the engine. Other things that do work as expected include the following - Shifter will not move unless brake pedal is pushed, but when brake is pushed, lever can be moved. Also, when the shifter is in "park" position (or neutral), there is B+ to the starter relay, but when the lever is moved to what would be the reverse position (or D, 3, 2 or 1) there is no power to the relay (this is how it's supposed to be). One other thing not working is that when lever is in what would be the R position, the reverse lights in back do not come on. It seems power isn't getting to anything shift lever related. Help!!!

It sure sounds like the Park/Neutral Position and Back-Up Lamp Switch or most people call it Neutral Safety switch. Over the almost 20 years of owning my Chevy Avalanche this will be the second time I'm having it replaced. The problem with the current switch started about three years ago where the car would start. I checked everything I knew how to check at the time and I found nothing wrong. Just by chance I shifted through the gears with the key in the on position and brake pedal pushed down. Once back in Park the Avalanche started like nothing was wrong. The problem was intermittent, but I'm talking about months without an issue. Then out of the blue the issue would show up again. I would do the same thing shift through the gears and the problem was gone again, but recently it's starting to happen more frequently light every other day so I'm having it replaced. The first time I replaced the Park/Neutral Position and Back-Up Lamp Switch the problem at the time was the display on the dash would not register what gear the shifter was in. A lot of the issues above are most likely due to this switch that sits outside the transmission thank god. I've read something on the internet that this was something inside the transmission. Good thing GM had the sense to mount it outside.
