No spark in 2004 Chevy Silverado 1500
Asked by Claire Jul 17, 2016 at 07:13 PM about the 2004 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LB 4WD
Question type: General
My truck just quit running...had to be towed to the shop. Diagnosis is no
spark. Replaced the coil, distributor cap, rotor, crank sensor and ignition
module and still nothing. Engine is getting plenty of fuel but won't fire. If
anyone has any suggestions, I'm ready for anything as it's been over 2 weeks
without my truck.

Check for blown engine fuse in fuse box under hood. And also did you replace the camshaft sensor ?
The fuse check is next....camshaft sensor then ECM. I had the fuel pump replaced about a week before the truck just quit, for the same symptoms. It ran fine for that week, then just died again.

Will it start if you spray some carb or throttle body cleaner into throttle ?
There's no spark from the wires/plugs...won't start no matter what they try
Nope....it just died without warning. What ever happened to real vehicles? Change the points, plugs, rotor, distributor cap and you were good to go; worst case scenario was a starter.

They are just trying to get us to take vehicle to the dealer to get it worked on.

Have your vehicle scanned any way for codes because if the check engine light was on at one time and now it is off it still stores the code in it's memory.
The check engine light didn't come on.....if the truck won't run, can they scan it anyway to diagnose the problem? Also, can I take it to a Ford dealer ((half a mile tow), or do I need to have it towed to a Chevy dealer (30 miles away)?

You maybe able to rent the scan tool from the local parts store like auto zone I no they rent tools may be able to rent scan tool also.
I'm gonna call the shop where the truck is and see if they have already scanned it...if not, I'm off to Auto Zone or Napa. Thanks so much for your help!! Just curious....is there any test to find out if the ECM is bad?
firebird338 answered 8 years ago
The check engine light scan should tell you everything you need to no.
Can you run a check engine light scan without the vehicle running?
firebird338 answered 8 years ago
Always do the scan with the vehicle off.
Okay...spoke with the mechanic that's been working on the truck. He scanned it 1st thing, and no codes came up. He has checked/replaced everything and still no spark. The distributor cap turns inside when cranking the engine, but no spark. The only thing that hasn't been replaced is the ECM. Any thoughts?? Thanks!

I no this is not going to make any sense to you since vehicle is spinning over good but install a new battery then try and start. About 39 years ago when I was a teenager had a 69 firebird one day would not start turned over good and strong but would not start found out just like you had no spark tried everything so out of curiosity replaced with a new battery and she fired right up still to this day do not understand why but it did. Not saying this is your problem but hey give it a try. It might surprise you.
Rather than spend $$ on a new battery (it's only a year old)...can I try jumping it to see if (hopefully) that's the problem?
firebird338 answered 8 years ago
Does not have to be a new battery but a battery that you know will start another vehicle or just try recharging that battery and yeah give that a try jumping vehicle at this point I know you are willing to try anything.
I'll stop by the shop tomorrow and tell Charlie to give it a try...he's as frustrated as I am over this...he always says" Ain't nothin' I can't fix"....I'll keep you posted...and thanks!
Well, the saga continues....replaced the ECM (pre-programmed) and STILL no spark; that was after jumping it, which didn't work either. Today he's going after the wire harness which is off the crank sensor, looking for chafing or cracks. If you can think of anything else it could be, please let me know. Thanks
I'm having a similiar issue, did you ever figure it out?
I got the same problem 2004 Chevy Silverado 1500 Z71 5.3 all fuses good all grounds good new starter and crank sensor security light isn't working either hook to the computer no codes had it at a shop for 3 weeks nothing sent it to the Chevy dealership and nothing bout to bring it home and figure it out myself I think the ecm or maybe I need to bypass the security
Ever find out the problem? Just replaced my engine an the exact same thing is happening but mine started for about two minutes an just stopped running an now wont start
Sounds like ignition switch.. I know crazy right but if you take a test light. Pull plug on coil test the wire while cranking. If light comes on when switch is on but goes off when actually cranking trace wire back to ecm fuse. Do same test on that fuse if same thing that wire eventually traces back to the ignition switch. Run a jumper wire from battery to the ecm fuse 15 amp leave fuse in just hold to open pin on top of fuse. Have someone crankit. If it starts its the switch
Did you ever find the actual issue? We are going through same circumstances. Any help would be appreciated.
I have seen the plug in the steering column right behind the steering wheel come unplugged plugged it in and it ran fine it is on the bottom of the column

Had a Ford with a bad ignition switch. To test, put 12v battery power to any power wire of the engine harness (MAF, etc) Mine was getting power at "crank" and would start but then die as soon letting off crank position of switch. (so the "run" terminal must be bad on the ignition switch)

Anybody figure the issue out yes, I have same problem with 2002 Chevrolet pickup? Thanks Have already changed the ignition sensor.
test coil at plug . plug has 3 wires going into it . . should have spark . my plug was broke inside so no fire . . also turn fuse box over and look for mouse damage at wiring . 2 more answers to no spark conditions. i have seen both

Look video up called (can't kill me) gm 4.3 4.8 5.0 5.7 6.0 he shows were this little ground wire is and it comes loose and he shows how to hook up and it starts up so many people said they replaced the fuel pump they replaced the cams they have sensor they replace all kinds of stuff then tried that and it actually worked there's probably 100 people in there saying they tried it and it works and the dealership charges $1,000 to do it to his buddy's truck
