2006 Chevy silverado 4wd crew cab transmission?

My truck switched itself into Auto 4wd and when I push the 2wd button it acts like it is neutral. Drives in auto 4wd and 4 hi and Low but nothing in 2wd mode. What could this be? and how do I fix it?

My 2005 4WD actuator/encoder motor went out at 32K. Same issues with switching modes. Stuck at the dealer it cost me 800 bucks. Today, at 110K, intermittently it won't switch or the light is off and get a "check transmission" display (restarting fixes it). I've read elsewhere these are susceptible to moisture, and this time I'll save 600 bucks and do it myself.

^^^the display was actually "service 4wd" (not transmission) during its hiccups. Your Auto4WD is actually 2WD and then 4WD kicks in when there's slippage detected.
