disconnected battery to install stereo now speedometer and fuel guage not working

Did you deviate from the installation instructions? How about wires. Did you cut/splice into any? Odds are that you did something like that.
Mark is right, it's probably something obvious. However if you didn't mess with any of the wires going to the cluster the GM truck lineup all of them and I mean ALL of them had bad clusters. (silverado, suburban, tahoe, trailblazer, envoy, yukon, yukon xl, escalade family, avalanche, rainier, bravada). Recheck your wiring and hope that's your problem because a cluster is not cheap to replace.

Mine quit working even despite several stops where I turned the engine off. It was COLD outside. Then I parked it in the garage for a couple of days and the batteries were too low to start the truck. After jumps to start everything started working again. I conclude it was the circuit to protect the alternator that turned things off and stopped the charging. Just a theory but all I can figure at this point.
