can the air intake heater be eliminated on 2002 duramax

Asked by dianekay Jul 08, 2015 at 03:59 PM about the 2002 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD LS Extended Cab LB 4WD

Question type: Car Customization

I have removed the air intake heater and put a plug in it's place. The "service engine soon" light was cleared, but it came back on later.  Is it possible to stop the light from coming on permanently and still diagnose other engine problems?

did you put in the right plug?something has to flow thru it. >This plug replaces the air intake heater for less restriction in your intake. The '99.5 and up 7.3L Powerstrokes and the 2001-2005 6.6L Duramax engines are equipped with a Air Intake(Grid) Heater as well as a glowplug circuit. The Air Intake heater is not needed in most cases and was designed for extended idleing. This Air Intake heater blocks approximately 20% of the airflow through the intake manifold. By replacing the Air Intakeheater with this plug, you increase airflow -- allowing better combustion. This WILL NOT affect cold starts. This fix does NOT cut off heat to the cab.

Initial problem diagnosed as being AIH relay and since I didn't need the AIH I replaced it with a drain plug. Trying to save money and improve performance.

Remove the black wire (ground). You can leave this hanging in the valley as it is only a ground wire or you can trace it back to its origin and remove it completely. Remove the red wire (hot) from the air intake heater. Follow the red wire back to where it terminates at an electric solenoid. You'll need to remove this end of the red wire as well. did you >>>> There is a blue wire attached to the same terminal post on the solenoid. Leave this blue wire attached. If you do not leave the blue wire attached, a diagnostic scanner cannot do a full contribution test on your vehicle. Do not ignore this.

Attempted to follow your directions. This is what I seen - wire connected to top of air intake heater is black and it terminates at a solenoid located below a solenoid with large red cable attached to it, where it connects with a small pink wire, with a blue sheath covering and a plug in connection on it. The solenoid with the red wire attached has 2 blue wires connected to it coming from the relay box. I am confused!
