why does it stall?
Asked by Arnie Dec 14, 2006 at 06:22 PM about the 2000 Chevrolet Tracker 4-Door RWD
Question type: Maintenance & Repair
It has 70000+ miles and it tends to stall when idling or if you turn it off to run into a store for a short time it does not want to start backup. After about 10 or 15 min. it will start and run fine again.

This can be caused by a bad fuel filter or a bad electronic fuel pump. Obviously, the first is a much less expensive fix. I would start by changing your fuel filter. If the car still stalls, you may need to look into replacing the electronic fuel pump.
I have the same problem with my 2001 tracker bought new. It has 70000 miles too. When I Go into a store and must wait 15 or 20 minutes to start again, It also stalls when idling when engine is warm. I am going to a garage today and check the fuel filter, fuel pump, crank shaft sensor, temp sensor, and maybe mass airflow. Does anyone else have a suggestion? Greatly appreciated because it is in A1 shape and do not want to put it away in my barn for the next 20 years.

Hello my name is screwed at the moment, I just bought a 2001 tracker and am having the same trouble as yours. You described it to a tee. Did you ever get it figured out? If so would you mind sharing the information? Thanks, take all the help I can get.
My step daughter had same problem with 2002 Tracker. Just replaced crankshaft sensor. So far, no problem stalling.

My 2003 Chevy tracker I got from my mom when my dad died. Alright well, when I start it up it will spit and sputter and I got to be quick at putting in in reverse or drive. But once I get going down the road and I maintain a good speed it’ll run good but once I slow down or hit my breaks it’ll spit and sputter and eventually die on me. But it’ll start right back up and do it all over again. We do have a small hole in our gas tank. Anyone got any ideas. Don’t want to get rid of it and neither does my mom cause my dad loved that thing and kept it dusted out he actually finished putting new breaks on it the day he died. So it has emotional ties.
I am having the same issue with my 2003 tracker with 109,xxx miles. It is new to me as of Thursday. I was going to start with a crank sensor. And move to a fuel filter/pump from there.
