What is making my V8 sound like an electric car??

My car recently started making a whirring sound under the hood, while it's in idle and in drive/reverse.  When I give it some gas, the sound goes up in pitch, and back down when it's not receiving as much gas.  It sounds exactly like an electric car sounds, and is totally cheesy and embarrassing on my mean looking car! I called an auto parts store and the guy said to check the vacuum hoses, but I don't know what that means!! Help! I have a 2006 Ford Mustang GT. What am I supposed to be doing? How do I fix this problem?

Sounds like you need an alternator. "Sounds like an electric car" gives it away, and if it was the power steering pump it would go away at idle just sitting there.
