Engine light

Asked by Avondale Sep 10, 2017 at 08:24 PM about the 1996 Ford Crown Victoria 4 Dr S Sedan

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

It seems like every time it's due for emissions my 1996
Ford Crown Victorias engine light comes on. It's off all year
round until this time of the year. I bought a scanner code
but I don't know which cold it is it comes up with too many
of them that's listed on the paper how do I know which one
it is cuz it says to check all of them if any of the codes pop
up there has to be one certain code. Every year I was taking
it to the Ford Company and they would tell me to drive 100
miles and then call them when I was done and they would
set the cold after I was done and charged me the money to
do it I mean she punched the code in before I even was out
of my car so apparently there's one certain code.
Could you please help me with this cuz I cannot afford the
$40 this year I'm on supplemental security

Take it to any auto parts store, like Autozone, Advance, or O'Rielly, they will do a free diagnostic trouble code (DTC) scan. Post the code here or google it for what it means for further help. It's possible you have multiple codes so post them all.

Still having problem with 1996 Crown Victoria. Took it to the emissions passed all tests but they failed it because that engine light will not go off. Cousin owns a transmission shop hooked it up to diagnostic machine no codes will show. Tags have been expired since July 2017. I can't drive it nowhere to have anyone else tested. Am I allowed to get a waiver for this problem. It is passing the major test of the missions that that damn light stays on in so they won't give me my tags best. In Avondale Arizona

If CEL is on, then it should be setting an OBD2 trouble code. Either buy a simple scan tool and scan it or get it done at any shop or parts store. IF you have a loss of power it will blank out the code, but it will come back quick. As far as driving it, see if the license bureau will issue you a temp tag until car is fixed to pass e-test. That's what my states does.

I have a 2010 crown Vic my engine light is on 138 code I change the O2 sensor and less that less than a mile it came back on I also have a 1279 code anybody help
