Asked by Pursuit May 09, 2011 at 01:30 AM about the 2001 Ford Crown Victoria STD

Question type: General

My 2001 Crown Victoria is a luxury model with nice hubcaps, vinyl top, and luxury interior.  Yet, it has a Pursuit Vehicle badge and the interceptor engine.  Why is that?

It was a one owner vehicle owned by an elderly man. it looks like a regular car minus the badge and the engine. it puzzled me!

well it could have been a special order from original owner.eather way, this car was built for law enforcement, but was avalabale to the public as a special order car.

You would need to describe luxury model more accurately in order to help, but the P71 is the Police Interceptor (has badge on back) and could be ordered in different level of trim. Some Deputy or Sherrif might have wanted a full carpet and material seat model with hubcaps and extra electric items to cruise around in and that is what you got. Police Interceptor (P71) only designates a more aggressive programming of the transmission, heavier duty suspension, some option deletes and a few other things, but is essentially a Crown Victoria with less luxury. The other thing it could be is a regular Crown Vic with a badge added to the back of the car. Seeing as it has a vinyl top I would think that it is this instead of a true P71. You can find out very easily, does your VIN have P71 in it (around the middle portion of the VIN). You can also give your VIN to Ford and ask for the build sheet. Call Ford customer service.

Sounds like a special order FBI, State police, local PD detective or sheriffs car that never got badges.

The dead giveaway for a former Law-Enforcement vehicle would be: holes drilled in the interior (dash, floorboard), spot light holes in the "A" pillars and a very obviously altered electrical system. The "Police Interceptor" badges are constantly falling off of our Patrol Cars - in fact, you can find them all over our shop! The heat, time and very little effort takes them right off.

I was told the pursuit package was set up for maximum fuel efficiencie for long distance pursuits and the regular interceptor was set up for intercepting. I imagine the pursuit has a pass on emmisions requirements.
