Asked by Jose Dec 16, 2017 at 09:56 AM about the 2004 Ford Crown Victoria LX

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

when I lowered my window the radio turned off. after a few tries with the window switch the radio turned back on a few minutes later there was a burnt wire smell. days later I was reversing and lowered the windows again and the radio turned off then my car died. I tried to start the car but was getting no power. I checked the solenoid and the car would turn over but not start that's when I checked the fuel pump and it was not working. I tried to replace the ignition switch and still no power to my systems. all my lights work in and out of the car and my insterment panel has power. I still cant trace the problem

If you can smell a burning wire then you fried something. You'll need to pick up a wiring diagram for a CV and a meter and start tracing out the circuits, looking for shorts or opens. Autozone's web site has wiring diagrams for most makes and models, just look under their "repair guides" section. You can also isolate some major circuits by pulling fuses and seeing how it affects problem. You can also visually inspect wire loom as much as possible, if you smelt burning wire then you may be able to see where it's damaged at.

Check the battery connection to the under hood fuse box. There is a very short cable running from the positive terminal of the battery to it. It is less than a foot long. Make sure there is no corrosion at the connection. Also be very careful not to overtighten the nut at the fuse box that holds that connection as it is easy to break off. Absolutely clean battery cable connections are a must.

I'm having a start problem also (intermittent) and it's related to the post at end of short cable under box. I cleaned the connections but have recurring problem which has to be I think inside the box or the cable connection. I believe it's my short cable because when using a jumper wire it starts right up.
