I have a 2002 Ford Escape with 100K miles. Without warning the transmission started acting up. When I floor the gas, the car does not react; the tach goes to 4000rpm but the car does not go like it should. The car also does not have power to climb hills very well even with the gas to the floor. I was told that the clutches were bad so I purchased & installed a remanufactured tranny from Advance Auto. Once the install was complete, I started the car up and let it warm up and made sure all fluids were at the proper levels. Took it for a test drive and to my surprise, the same thing was still happening. Any thoughts on this?

The check engine light did not come on. The engine is running fine; no misfires.

Check the rear end?May be holding the tranny back.

I do not think that may be the case. As I drive it at 4000 rpm's, it will suddenly "kick in" and back off down to 2000 rpms and maintain speed at 60mph. Still, if I stomp it to the floor, there is not reaction again.

Have checked out the tranny for this model,there are known of this type failure,but Advanceauto is liable for the one you have now,get it out ,send it back,and hope they send a good one back,google 2002 ford escape tranny,there are thousand,s with the same issue,the tranny was poorly built by ford, good luck with it.

There was no misfires or engine light (trouble codes) indicating something the problem was originating elsewhere other than the transmission. In the end, it was a clogged cat converter.

I had this same trouble with a 2005 Escape; high revs & no power and no check engine lights. I replaced the entire transmission and the speed sensors on it - still acted the same. The problem was a clogged catalytic converter. Once I changed that, it ran just fine. You may want to try unbolting the converter and test drive it.
