You have a 5.4, 3 valve. This engine and the 4.6 came out with a VCT system meaning that the timing is constantly being adjusted as you drive. It requires oil pressure that flows through a set of solenoids, 1 mounted on each head which are controlled by PCM (computer) and allows oil nto activate the phasers that are mounted, 1 on each camshaft. Check the oil pressure whe engine is cold and let it run till it reaches normal operating temperature and see if oil pressure went down. If it drops below 30psi, you have internal oil bypass such as engine wear on rod and main bearings or leaking somewhere inside engine. If pressure remains normal, you need to check the VCT system. You are probably hearing the engine noise that sounds like a diesel truck when this happens

It's a Ford thing, just run it till it dies and get you a Dodge
