Drive in reverse as you switch back to 4Wheel high.

If that doesn't work, try starting the truck put the transmission gear selector in neuteral. Then put the 4x4 switch/button into 4 low for a few seconds. Now put the 4x4 switch into 4 hi and then 2wd. Now put the transmission gear selector into drive or reverse move the truck 20-30 feet and it should be ok.

Thank you! I tried everything and then I read your post to put it in neutral and then push the 2d button and it finally went out of low 4w drive. What a relief!!

I'm glad that I could help! If either the gear selector or transfer case are in neutral your truck won't move.

Driving back and forth a little and then stopping and trying to shift it out of 4wd should work but it may take several tries.

I just had this problem on my 07 f150. I was fooling around in a parking lot; getting used to my "new" plow truck that I am buidling. I put the car into -what I thought was neutral and selected -what I thought was, "4x4high". i heard something coming from the transfer case almost like a "grinding" noise or a change of gears? I was stuck in 4x4 low. I crept along. trying to fix the problem. nothing. I googled for a remedy and this page was the first to come up and I read the first few suggestions. I parked, turned off the engine. selected "2xhigh" back up a one car length and like magic, I was back in gear! thank you all for your posts, it saved me. well done guys!

Just an FYI, had this happen this morning. Was in the middle of trying all your suggestions and the battery died. Found out the battery light was on. Charged it until the hubby got home, and voila! It popped right into both 2wd and 4wd high no problem. I am guessing the battery didn't have enough umph!?

My 1999 Expedition got stuck in 4x4 low range and i couldn't turn it off. Turns out that the electronic pedal settings that bring the pedals toward and away from the driver was set to all the way toward the driver. As soon as i moved he pedal assembly all the way away from the driver seat, put the car in neutral while stepping on the brake, the a4wd-4wdHI-and 4wdLO all switched just fine. Seems to me there must be a switch on the brake pedal that allows the 4wd options to function properly?

14 people found this helpful.

Thank you so much for your help. Im glad I didn't have to drive 3 hours in 4wd!

Have a 2008 Explorer with buttons 4x4Auto/4x4H/4x4L and tried the reversing (many times) and pushing the auto button but no success. Unhooked the battery for 15 mins, reconnected battery, turned the key enough to get gearshift in neutral, put foot on brake and then pushed the auto button. Seems to have worked. Thanks all for the suggestions.

I have a 2004 f150 4x4. No dashboard indicator showed anything about being stuck in 4x4 low. For routine troubleshooting I always unplug the battery and reattach to reset my systems....voila, the dashboard light showed 4x4 low, even though my switch was in 2H! I followed the instructions given here and shifted to neutral, switched the 4x4 to 2H and booom, worked like magic. Thanks!

Thank you so much. I was concerned that I messed up my truck. I did what you said about the neutral.... and it worked! So relieved thank you so much!

@TransAm77 Thank you! It was my husbands first day of work and you helped save his new job. Much thanks.

i got a ford explorer sport trac xlt v5 4l 2005 ist it normal i got to kick on the hub to engage and disengage my 4low 4 high and 2wd work fine just the 4 low it had a hard time to go into it i have to play between high and low after kicking the hub on the wheels and i also have to play between reverse neutral and drive for it to lock onto the low 4x4

20

like some the above solution and question are similare to mine but not quit exact i know in my owner manual my trans should be in neutral for my transfer case to shift from high ton low 4x4 it come off and goes on the same way all the time i have to step out kick the hub go reverse 3 or 4 fooot then put it in neutral turn the switch from low to high then go foward it goes off them im all ok to po=ut it back on 2wd but the point of having a button switch is so you dont have to get out but my forces me to anyway

I tried the back up method. Did not work. Disconnecting the battery was a complete success. On another note if your vehicle has an alarm. Beware. Disconnecting the battery will put the vehicle on lock down. So, make sure you know how to reset or over ride your alarm. Thank you for this helpful solution.

5 years ago that happened in my 97 ranger plus could barely get it out of park. Had to drive from the mountains in 4 low lucky manual hubs were installed. Found out it was the brake switch, went to the junkyard grabbed one for free and all is still good.

My 1999 f150 is in low range but not totally locked in 4 wheel drive. I've disconnected battery tried neutral pull up and back many times can't go over 30 mph shows I'm doing 100 help

My 2004 Ford Explorer is stuck in 4X4 High. I tried everything except unhook battery, I worried I will have to go to a dealership

20

If your 4 wheel drive is stuck an it don’t work when you reverse it an stuff it’s probably your fuse blown check that out an if it’s blown out another one back in it an if it keeps blowing you probably got a short but if it dose blow again keep the truck on the 4 wheel drive an put the fuse in an drive it an switch it back to 2 wheel an it shouldn’t blow

I turned the key half way on then put it in neutral, pushed 4+4 auto the started it. Thank you car gurus.it worked.

Thank you Trans Am man. Your trick worked wonderfully. Saved me a huge headache and a bill at the dealership/mechanics. Mark

20

Thanks for the info. My truck was a 2008 chev duramak. Put my truck in neutral and it worked. This was after I drove at 60km for 80 km after camping. Can not believe how simple a fix. Hopefully the drive home did not damage anything. Jack

I have followed the advice above and I put my Ford explore 2005 in neutral and after a while It was easy to switch from one to the other and switch it off again but the car needs to be in neutral ! so it can switch its gears ,not park!

10

Trans am's answer (below) worked for my 2005 ranger stuck in 4wlow. No idea why but sure glad it did. "If that doesn't work, try starting the truck put the transmission gear selector in neuteral. Then put the 4x4 switch/button into 4 low for a few seconds. Now put the 4x4 switch into 4 hi and then 2wd. Now put the transmission gear selector into drive or reverse move the truck 20-30 feet and it should be ok."

1 people found this helpful.

we tried all the above nothing worked,I accidentally hit the overdrive button and when I shut it off,the four wheel came out of four low to just four by four and I switched to 2 wheel and it worked.fixed itself !!! still has to be looked at,but at least can drive

Transam, thank you for your answer. The first time this happened I was sure I had burned up my transmission. The mechanic I took it to informed me that the transmission was fine. But he still charged me $400 to correct the problem. I really am grateful for your answer. You saved me some money, I have no doubt.

Have not seen it mentioned here (perhaps I missed it) but my 2003 Ford Explorer requires me to have the vehicle in neutral AND press down on the BRAKE PEDAL before it will shift into or out of 4WD Low. Not sure what other years and models require this as well. Another thing... on many Fords you should listen for the slight click of a relay under the dash when shifting into/out of 4WD High. If the button flashes a bit and then stops, but you never hear the click, likely something has blocked the vehicle's "oversight" circuits (ECM, etc.) from energizing the relay and thus commanding the shift into low at the transfer case. This can include attempting to shift into 4WD Low when not in neutral, or failing to depress the brake pedal when the button is pressed (at least on some models). The "disconnect the battery" solution that has helped some of you may be a matter of doing so forcing a clearing of a "don't shift" command that has somehow been generated in the oversight circuitry. I DO HAVE A DIFFERENT ISSUE I"M RESEARCHING THOUGH... this Ford WILL shift into 4WD HIGH (when that button is pressed) but the indicator light does not illuminate (bulb is good as it lights up along with the other instrument cluster indicator lights at start up). I know it's actually in 4WD high based on the typical "4WD" spindle/gearing noises I hear when driving...especially when turning the steering wheel a bit. Anyone have an idea about this???

2009 Ranger Sport. Disconnect, Turn to neutral, move switch back and forth seemed to have cleared the light (4WDL). Have not driven it yet, but seems to have worked. Thank God for the internet!

I just took my husband’s truck out of 4wd low using these instructions. Thank you so much!

my truck is a 2000 f150 standard it has no four wheel drive switch just the shifter and its stuck in four wheel low any ideas what might be wrong
