What happened to my motor ?

Asked by GuruCD7CH Feb 03, 2019 at 10:19 PM about the 2003 Ford Explorer XLS V6

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

While driving my truck i heard a loud boom.
Immediately the engine started shaking super
violently and smoking bad to the point where i
thought I was going to catch fire.. I pulled over and
they had a trail of oil (it was a LOT of oil) leading all
the way up to the point where I stopped.. towed it
home and it continued to leak out the last bit of oil
as it sat.

Now this truck has already been junked but i’m
curious as to what actually happened, since
searching google I thought would bring me sure
answers but i’m more confused than ever beyond
the obvious “it lost its’ oil” .. these weren’t the
symptoms of head gasket failure or even bad
seals..

The thing that mystifies me is that it hadn’t showed
any signs of trouble. It ran smooth and just days
before I used my code reader to run the codes and
all that was present was a measly exhaust leak
code

Could have destroyed itself from the inside like maybe throwing a piston rod or a bearing part out through the oil pan.
