2003 explorer 4.6 exhaust leak

Asked by forked Sep 11, 2012 at 01:45 PM about the 2003 Ford Explorer XLT V8 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Tailpipe came apart where it bends to go over the axle just above the universal. I will eventually fix this but time is
short right now and trying to get a gauge on the urgency of this repair. I'm a little concerned about the effects of the
hot exhaust on the universal. Does this need to be fixed right away or can it wait?

won't affect the u joint at all. I'd be more concerned about exhaust fumes back into the passenger compartment. And I'd take 15 minutes and have someone tack weld it with a wire feed just to hold you over, throw someone a $20...

I used a very sticky tar base exhaust tape on a completely broken tailpipe assembly before the muffler of a small motorcycle due to the noise. It worked so well I completely forgot about the break because of the lack of noise for several months.
