2006 ford explorer catylatic converter plugged up. I waited to replace until I had to. It started overheating my car.

Asked by Botchlet2006 Mar 15, 2017 at 03:18 AM about the 2006 Ford Explorer XLT V8 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I cut off my cats and it helped Lot but it still trys to over heat, not near as bad it
helped alot. Went from overheating ever 3 mins to every 30. But it only does
under stress or laod. If in idle or I even let off gas it drops back down
immediately. I don't know if I damaged my motor or not but I do have new
radiator, water pump, thermostat, fluid, it's been flushed. I'm just lost out of
ideas. Ps it's a 4.6L 3v v8

Are you sure that you bleed (burped ) the system??? No cat and you should run cooler. You may have a clogged block...

Yes as COMETGUY61 says, try purging the cooling system from any air pockets. www.youtube.com/watch?v=xeTgmdRkQtY

Ya I've purged and maybe block but it's random and it won't overheat in park unless the ac is on. I've flushed my system and I have new fluid in it about 10 times this year. Cause I have blown hoses. And I replaced radiator and water pump. I'm almost thinking my be its power steering pump pully or not her pulley. I'm stumped I think I might pull thermostat and see it flooding the engine with coolant helps.

Ya ur not going to believe this but I change spark plugs on bank 2. Stopped getting the below threshold and stopped overheating. So yes a spark plug cause it to over heat so e how.

Then there must have ben the wrong spark plugs in the engine to begin with.

No they just been in there for 200000 miles. It doesn't make since to me either but something was causeing to to drag.

With that many miles on the plugs, the gap must have ben huge, that would cause a hotter spark.
