Warning signal saying Engine Failsafe Mode

Question type: Maintenance & Repair
On Saturday I was driving and the car was sluggish, then the warning light came on with the statement Engine Failsafe Mode. What does that mean and what do I need to do, the book said go to the dealer immediately.

ENGINE FAILSAFE MODE means the throttle is stuck open or is broken resulting in over 1300.00 in repairs. Less than thirty days later the check engine light came on again, this time the dealer service department told me the #1 coil and a spark plug needed to be changed and it would cost me 843.00 to repair just one each, but I could get 2 coils and 5 spark plugs replaced for 973.00. Rip off!!! Why was this not seen when they diagnosed my vehicle the first time?
Those problems will not present themselves until there is an actual problem with that particular system. Those parts had to fail before they would set a code for that, that is why they didn't see at the time of the first repair. Hope this is helpful.
I am also getting the Engine Failsafe mode errors again, and this is after two (2) replacement throttle bodies! Each lasted for about a year. I'm so pissed at Ford and haave vowed that I will never own another Ford despite their curb appeal. Its simply not worth the ass-ache.

My 05 five hundred went in engine fail safe mode yesterday when I went out to crank it up... also smells like gas when I crank it. Have never had any issues with it, but only have had it a few months now, only has around 160k miles on it.
