2006 ford focus 8 mechanics cannot solve

Asked by Drewhoo990 Nov 23, 2018 at 09:09 AM about the 2006 Ford Focus ZXW SES Wagon

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 2006 ford focus. My wife was driving it
and said the car would slam like she ran into
something then keep going. I drove the car for two
weeks and didnt find any issues. As time went on
the problem became more prevalent. Now you
cannot drive the car more than a mile without
issues. Here's what's happening
As you drive forward the car will normally shift
through the gears. Once up to speed the car will
slam down 1 or 2 gears. The wheel sensor light
goes on and the car may either shift back into the
proper gear or completely shut off. If it shuts off it
will randomly start running again normal or you put
it in neutral and start it. The car starts fine typically.
Other times it would only turnover but not start.
Sometimes for hours. Once I got it running again it
might get up to speed or might not and will have
the same issues. Speed, bumps, rate of
acceleration, braking, specific gear.....none of these
effect the problem. I have taken this car to 8
mechanics and none have been able to solve or
find the problem. The only thing I have noticed is
that the car will run forever if in park. If you have
already had issues sometimes when you shift to
drive from park it will shut down. The other time
when it isnt affected is when the car is in reverse. I
can back the car up as much as I want and at any
speed I want and nothing happens. Anyone want to
take a stab at it? I'm to the point of just scrapping
the car. I believe it's the 2.0 motor.

You probably found eight mechanics who don't like to work on transmissions. Add my name to that list. Take it to a transmission shop for a professional diagnosis. Scan for fault codes yourself if you are curious. Might only be a shift solenoid or overdue for servicing. Don't scrap it...I think your Wife wants a new car. Good Luck

I took it to 3 transmission shops. I've had family member who is a mechanic and he said after going through the car and trying to find the issue he wouldn't buy it for $100. The wife and I both have new vehicles. I'm just trying to figure out if it's worth my time for the kids sake. This doesnt seem like a transmission problem. It seems more like an electrical or sensor issue

It sounds like it could be a bad torque converter I had one years ago in an old chevy that would shut the engine down jump in and out of gear turned out to be after some research the guy whom owned it put the wrong dipstick in the car so it was out of trans fluid when it read full.sounds about the same

I gave the car to a shop that had it for two weeks and they drove it around every day to go pick up parts and the car never had an issue with them. The guy is the most reputable shop around. After not finding anything he didnt charge me because he couldn't find any issues with it. That was when problems with the car would only happen once a month. Now it just flat out can't be driven

If it didn't act up while they had it then that might explain why they couldn't find the problem. Now that it is acting up every time you drive it might want to give it back to that shop and let them test drive it again. Your going to need it put on a diagnostic stand to solve. You don't make any mention of the condition of the transmission fluid. Was it bad? Discolored? Dirty? Did the scan tool reveal any issues with fluid pressures or shift solenoids? Have they checked the wheel speed sensors as the cause for the ABS light?

Fluid was normal. Scanner didnt pull any codes. All wheel sensors were checked and working. I might take it back again now that it's happening constantly
