Car will not turn over, battery is good, what may it be

Asked by Frog01963 Aug 31, 2016 at 11:02 AM about the 2002 Ford Taurus SE

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Car stalled at a stop sign. It will not even turn over, I do not hear the fuel
pump kick on when the key is turned on. The headlights do not dim at all
when attempting to start the car. The main fuse in the fuse box under the
hood is good.

Good question. It's not the starter, because the starter wouldn't have caused the car to stall. ALso, even with a bad starter you would here the electric fuel pump kick on long enough to pressurize the fuel system. And if the starter had shorted out badly enough to stall the motor, it would have fouled the whole electrical system, and that's not the problem here. And heater fan 'Resist'? Not sure what a 'Resist' is, but once again, if that shorted out badly enough to cause the motor to stall, there wouldn't be much of anything left working in the electrical system. Whatever it is, it means that there is a break between the key and the starter solenoid , whatever that might turn out to be. And I'm looking for that answer now. When I find out, I'll let you know.

So I had to pay a Ford dealership $1500 to replace the ECU in my Taurus to get it back on the road. I'm still not 100% percent convinced that the ECU was the problem to began with, and, on top of that, I'm not really sure that it was actually replaced. It could be that the old one in the car was just simply re-programed, and since they wouldn't show me the old one that they took out, I can't be sure that it wasn't. I did look to see if I could tell where the old one was removed, (I should have been able to see where dust and dirt had been disturbed on and around the cover over the ECU, it was not, thier explanation was, "Oh, our mechnics know how to get it out without removing the cover"... Yeah, whatever) I still had to take the car to another shop to find out what had happened to the lights on the car, (multiple blown fuses) fortunately that shop cut me a break, and didn't even charge me to replace the fuses.
