What is causing my car to hum?

My 2002 Ford Taurus SES is humming during idle. It gets louder as I accelerate until I hit
20 mph or so. If it hums after thatI can't tell.  It's also become a bit sluggish during
acceleration. Gas use is between 22-25 mpg It hasn't become worse at all. Help!

I tried just turning the key when I just had to roll up the windows. I had the heat on and noticed that the hum was there. Turned the heater off and the hum went away! Now what?
