My 2004 Ford Taurus won't shift out of park and my brake lights won't come on when I touch the brake pedal.

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

In order for my car to shift out of park, I have to beat on my brake pedal alot.  Then when
my car finally gets out of the park gear into reverse or drive, the brake lights will not come
on.  It first started with my brake lights not going off when I pulled in my drive way and
my husband told me the lights were still on after turning my car off, locking the doors and
going into my house for about an hour.

There's a safety switch located on the outside of the transmission behind the shift lever would cause the problem
