2002 Pt cruiser coolant bubbling

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

While driving my car one night, I heard a crack
sound. Thought it was strange, but didn’t think
much of it. But then as I kept driving over a couple
of days, my temperature gage kept creeping up
more and more to the point where it almost
reached red hot. I then did a coolant flush to see if
maybe I needed new coolant, but it still
overheated. I then replaced the thermostat, still
overheated. I ordered a new radiator and put it in
today. I went for a 15 minute drive and my temp
gage stayed below the half way mark which was a
good sign. I drove it a second time and when I
parked and turned off the engine, I heard a really
loud bubbling/ boiling noise. My temp gage is
normal and is not over heating anymore, but after
the second drive, it made that bubbling noise. I
don’t think it is a head gasket because i checked
the oil and there is no coolant leaking into it. I also
don’t think it is the water pump because I my heat
still works. What else could it be?

Wouldn’t I have misfires if that were the case? The car runs completely fine and isn’t overheating anymore. Could it be so simple that maybe there’s still air trapped inside?

My grandpa tested for a blown head gasket and It’s fine. Now my problem is, when I started driving again, my car started over cooling. My grandpa looked at it again the day after and immediately upon starting up he had said my upper rad hose was warm (after it’s been sitting overnight.) My car takes forever to heat up and when I drive, the temp gauge decreases significantly. When idling at a stop sign or stop light, it rises up to midpoint but then decreases a lot when driving again. He suggested my thermostat was stuck open (which this thermostat is brand new.) I had bought a FailSafe thermostat and on the box it says, when overheating occurs the thermostat will automatically lock into the stuck open position so that it doesn’t overheat. I thought maybe I bought a defected one so I returned it and replaced it today. The first drive with the second new one was perfect. It stayed a hair below midpoint pretty much the entire time. But, after a couple of hours of letting it set, on the way home, it started over cooling again. Obviously there is still something wrong and my car still wants to overheat. I think all that’s left is replacing the water pump, right?
