2002 PT cruiser overheats while idling

Asked by Pinkfuzzy Oct 16, 2017 at 04:24 PM about the 2002 Chrysler PT Cruiser Limited Wagon FWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Any time my car idles for more than a couple of minutes it
overheats. Some type of pressure release typically blows
out twice and then it starts boiling. Coolant level is fine
and radiator was replaced two years ago.

Check your cooling fan to be sure it is coming on. Letting it overheat to boiling can lead to a leaking head gasket/ warped head. Head should be retorqued at the same time a timing belt is replaced, with care taken not to over-torque the stretch bolts, so they don't break. Check radiator fluid for bubbles. Check oil for 'milkshake' which would indicate water in the oil as a more serious cause of overheating.
