How long' if only the timing
belt needs replaced, would
the estimated time for a
professional mechanic from
start to finish?
How common it it to get the
valves messed up when the
timing belt breaks on this
vehicle?

An expert Chrysler mechanic can do it in about 3 hours but book time will probably be at least 6 which is a fair number. Getting to the TB is a real chore. The valves should not be messed up because it is a non-interference engine. If the belt broke while you were drag racing, then you may get some valve slap but a broken belt under normal driving conditions usually just causes the engine to stop running. Be sure to change the idler tensioner, camshaft sprocket oil seals, water pump and accessory belts since the mechanic is all the way down there anyway. The book says the A/C must be evacuated, but it can be done without draining the A/C system. Just be prepared to pay for it if the mechanic says it has to be done. It took me parts of 2 weekends or about 16 hours total to change the TB myself but that was because I was completely new at it and made several mistakes like cutting the water pump gasket and having to tear it all the way back down again. If I had to do it again, I could probably do it in a full long day (6 hours with breaks, maybe less because I now know the tricks)
