1990 Dodge Ram 150 318

Asked by OutsideTheBox Apr 06, 2019 at 02:10 PM about the 1990 Dodge RAM 150 RWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

First off I bought this 1990 dodge 150 2wd with a 318 for
$500 to build as my business truck. My plan is to fix and
keep the body original but drop it 3in(body 11in off the
ground). I'd love to keep the original 318 in it but the
speedometer doesn't work so mileage is unknown. Is it
worth fixing the original motor or get a rebuilt? Also how do
I fix the speedometer? Its oldschool dial counter

Rebuild kit 318 around 400 prob 300 more machine shop to clean up heads and block, bore 20 over, Dont mind getting dirty and making clean, engine rebuild is about 1500 cheaper do it yourself. Get a manual, have fun.

The speedo, may need cable, but most ive seen were stripped plastic gear in the tranny . mounted on driver side back of trans. Can be rotated clockwise a bit to further engage gear teeth if worn. Sometimes, not properly engage teeth get worn off. Pull colored cover off dash guage cluster, remove cluster unscrew big black cable off back of cluster Spin the flange on back of speedo guage it should bounce needle if not guage is bad. Also the trip milage button somtimes hangs causes milage counter to not run. Check cable for binding. When disconected from trany and cluster should be smooth and free turning. If not replace it.
