What would cause temp. gauge to go to hot and heater starts blowing cold then goes back to normal and starts blowin warm again?

I have replaced the thermostat and it didn't solve the problem

water pump could be going bad or the heater core is getting clogged up. when was the last time you flushed out the ccoolant
