Lifter knocking questions???

Asked by Khandi4474 Jul 31, 2015 at 12:22 PM about the 1994 GMC Sierra 1500 C1500 SLE Extended Cab LB

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I purchased a 94 GMC Sierra 1500, all original and in immaculate shape. I am having only a couple of issues and am curious. There is a knock where a lifter may be bad, but also we had it diagnosed and it needs the EGR valve replaced. Is there a correspondence between the two and if not, could the knock possibly be just the need for a different weight of oil? Do you recommend anything to determine whether or not the lifter is going bad or what I can do to quiet the tapping? It's not horrible, but it is noticeable, and since living in a hot climate (South Texas, 99 degrees- 105 degrees lately), is it best to use a heavier weight oil? I notice the knocking is more pronounced when driving on really hot days, so??? Also, hubby is ready to get rid of it, and my son and I LOVE it and don't want to, but don't want to have the added expense if something is REALLY wrong. Is he wrong, or should I get what I can a get out of the vehicle before my family and I are stranded with no vehicle, again?

If you change your oil leave out one quart and add a bottle of Lucas Engine Oil Stabilizer it will stop that tapping because I have seen and heard it stop a tap my friends vehicle had. With in 30 - 45 minutes of idling the tap was gone.
