This is going to sound stupid but I have a 1993 e350 ford club wagon that I had this problem with. My transmission leaked. I checked the fluid level and it showed fluid between the hash marks. So I never added fluid. One day I added 1qt. And the fluid level never moved. I added a second at. Still no movement. I added about half of a third qt. And the level finally started to move. In total I added 2 and 3/4 qt. To the transmission. Even thow it may show normal level on your dip stick your transmission may be low on fluid. After adding the fluid I stopped having the problem with shifting to reverse killing the engine. This was the only semton that I was low on fluid. The transmission shifted fine drive ability was fine. The only thing was it killed the engine when I shifted to reverse.
