1997 gmc k1500 5.7ltr auto - it will start ( cold start) and die, then start and die etc ( pumping accel no help ) finally will stay running - xmission now bangs into gear ?? clears up then.?

As stated....clears up  after several miles and restarts....then happens again..will sometimes show this problem while driving and makes it hard to get home. At my wits end - I'm not a good mechanic - just too old to do much to it...really would like to hear if someone else has had this problem and what the solution was...then I can get it fixed. thanks for any/all input from you all...

All fluid levels are up to snuff.....strange how when this happens the transmission just slams into gear ( all gears) until I have driven a ways and restarted the engine several times...after that you can't even feel the tranny shift....related somehow - computer controlled cars are over my head..thank you.
