Sputtering and stalling. Fuel system problems? 98 GMC Sierra 1500 5.0 V8

Asked by jibbinbuddha Sep 02, 2014 at 01:41 AM about the 1998 GMC Sierra 1500 K1500 SLE 4WD Extended Cab SB

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Truck started sputtering and stalling, but would run fine once it had been driven for a little while. Sometimes it would start normally, other times it would struggle. I replaced the fuel filter (because it was easy & cheap) and the fuel filter (because my fuel level gauge wasn't working) hoping that my problems would be solved. After getting new pump it the fuel level is now reading on my dash, but it struggled to start, idled poorly and sputtered going around the block. I'm going to pick up a fuel pressure gauge and double check the fuel lines, but I could really use some good advice. I have no mechanical experience out side of oil changes and dirt bike rebuilds

Does the thing feel like the timing is just off completely? Because I replaced the spark plugs, rotor and rotor cap, coil and coil control and Crankshaft Position Sensor. And a mechanic told me it was the fuel pump but I replaced it in about 2009 and it should have lasted much longer than this especially that I never let my tank go dry. It uses gas to lubricate itself. So what does everyone think on this?
