2003 gmc sierra 1500 wont start

check eng lite was on for 2 days. Was sitting in Walmart idling, started to run rough
then died. wouldn't turn over and steering wheel wouldn't lock. Has new battery, all
lights and electrical working.(All cluster gauges stopped working 3 months ago -
lights work,every once in a while indicator lights flicker).

usually the check engine light represents an air/fuel ratio problem.Could be oxygen sensor/clogged or dirty fuel filter,or worst case, a bad fuel pump.If you run your vehicle low on fuel(between 1/8 or lower,trash from your gas tank could be colgging the fuel inlet from the filter to the throttle body(unless you;ve carbed it).You can check the fuel pump by disconnecting the output side of the fuel filter(into a jar) and turn over the ignition to see if it is pumping. That gives you a place to start if its not the oxgen sensor.

with your electrical issues you will need to use a volt meter and check the output side of the fuse box to the affected items to see if you have output voltage sending to the part. If you have voltage check, and clean wiring harness connections, Clean all pins and recepticles with a trimmed fingernail emory board. A wiring harness issue could also be causing the fuel pump not to function correctly due to voltage issues.
