2004 GMC sierra 1500, shifter won't catch any gears

I started up my truck, couldn't get it to come out of Park, when it finally did, it went right through them all without catching any, no reverse, no drive, it will go into a gear, you can feel that but it doesn't feel like it 'caught' it, the gear that is.

I would get under it to check the shifter linkage.

It was the cables, changed it, started, shifted fine, went into store, come out and nothing when I turn the key, I messed with the shifter, into N, D, @, and it started, did I unplug/loosen something, signt seen, can't tell... Thanks
