bought a pre-owned 2005 Audi A6 which has 245/35 19' but these are giving me problems on African roads. Planning on changing the complete set to 225/45 on 17'. Would this affect car perfomance

No it would not affect the handling of the vehicle. Actually you should notice a nicer ride on these tires as the side wall is .61mm taller.
