Check the GVWR number which is probably on the door jamb sticker. Subtract the actual weight of the truck from that and the remainder is what you can safely carry.

My 2003 2500HD Diesel GVWR is 9200lbs. I was just on a truck scale and it weighed 3.37 tons (6740 with me in the truck) empty. So the payload weight would be 2460 lbs.
