Fuel Gauge Stuck On Full

Thank you so much for the detailed answer and I'm sure you are 100% right as its pretty much what I suspected. I have another question if you could help me out as its quite serious. Recently the back end of the car has been spinning out. I wasnt going fast about 20 mph but it was wet. It has happened a few times in the past month, once when i was doing 70mph on a motorway luckily it was very late at night and didnt have my four year old daughter in the car. Any idea what could be causing this? as i'm afraid to take her in the car in case we get in an accident. Many thanks in advance - jim

I think it’s faulty stepper motors on the guage itself.

Hi Guys, I'm so sorry for reopening this topic but I have got the same problem described from jimmwilde but reverse position. On My TT roadster 2003 (FWD 180bhp), the fuel needle is stuck on empty!!!! First of all: I filled the tank so it's completely full! I already changed in order: - FUEL PUMP with a brand new Magneti Marelli. I thought that was the problem, but nothing happened. when I turn on the car the pump is working perfectly but the fuel needle is always stuck on....EMPTY! - I sent the cluster to a company specialized in cluster repairing here in Turin (ITALY), they changed me the broken display in the middle of the cluster (same old problem), reset the temp and replaced the fuel gauge needle step by step motor with a new one. When I mounted back the cluster on the car.... nothing changed on the fuel gauge. It always shows empty! I sent the unit TWO TIMES to this company because I thought they didn't fix it properly. Nothing happened. They told me they tested the cluster with a similar VAG TEST on the desk and it worked perfectly. Every needle moved correctly. - I bought a new (used) cluster from a private seller. It was exactly the same part number (even if the car was 2004 coupe 180bhp) and it was repaired last year (replacing the broken display). I know it was working before so the problem is not the cluster itself. I mounted on the car and.....it's always EMPTY! Now the fuel needle is moving a little bit but it's not moving out from the empty area. So I tried connecting a cluster from an Audi S3 (8L version same ERA more or less) with a completely different Part Number and.....it shows FULL TANK! :O Then I tried a VAG TEST trying to understand WHY it's just showing me FULL tank with an S3 Cluster and EMPTY with TWO DIFFERENT PROPER AUDI TT CLUSTERS! The VAG TEST on the needles of TT Cluster (my original unit) is perfect. Every needle (speed, engine revs, temp and fuel) moved perfectly FULL-HALF-EMPTY. Perfect positions. Same results on the S3 Cluster. Then I moved to the fuel screen on the VAG (like the picture posted by jimmwilde). The results of the VAG was exactly as shown in the picture on the top of the discussion. Same results. "Fuel Sender Resistance" is exactly 290 OHM....BUT....when I connect the Audi S3 Cluster the VAG test shows me "FUEL LEVEL" 66.0l (so FULL TANK), when I connect TT Cluster (no matter which one) it shows me "FUEL LEVEL" 4,0l like the fuel tank is EMPTY!!!!! HOW IS IT POSSIBLE?!?!?!?! So I tried with the OLD fuel pump (now I know it was ok and not broken) without filling into the tank. I unplugged the connector from the fuel pump mounted on the car and I plugged on the OLD fuel pump with just the two fuel gauge PINS (disconnecting one the fuel pump PINS) and tried moving by hand the arm with the float....nothing happened on the TT Clusters! The fuel needle is not moving at all on both clusters. Contrariwise, with the S3 Cluster mounted on the car, moving by hand the float, the fuel needle was moving reverse mode (when I simulate the full tank, the fuel needle moves on EMPTY TANK and when I simulate the empty tank the fuel needle shows me FULL TANK). So.....The point is that the fuel needle on the S3 is sensible to the movement of the fuel pump float. Both the TT clusters are not sensible to the movements of the fuel pump Float. I don't know what's happened to my TT!!!
