I have a 2000 S4 and a 2003 A6 (has the same 2.7 engine as the S4) ... the cost to replace the timing service is around $900-$1100 total depending on your dealership. I paid $1k for my service on the S4. However, if the timing chain broke, which mine did on my A6, it was quoted between $3500-$4000 to repair. Reason being because when the timing chain broke, it bent the valves. So with that being said, it's more than worth it to have the timing service done on your S4.

Don't pay that much look online for the kit I believe ECS tuning has one for around $400. Total with labor should be around 1k. Good luck and do your research first before you commit to anything your dealer says!
