94 Jeep Gran Cherokee Laredo V8 5.2L Won't start. Has power and gas. Turns over.

Asked by Jacob3087 Oct 30, 2014 at 10:59 PM about the 1994 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I go to put the key in the ignition,  everything works,  has plenty of power,  fuel is being pumped to the engine, but the engine won't start.   Everything sounds perfectly normal, engine DOES turn over,   just won't start or even get a partial start and die.  Thought the starter might not have enough juice,  so I jumped the battery,  no luck.  Same issue.

Check your distributor cap, rotor and the wires. See if you have spark. That seems like that is all your missing.

Specify what you mean by check? I've taken auto tech but it's been years and forget where that is and what I should be checking about it and how to check if I have a spark

The distributor cap has the wires going to the spark plugs. If the engine is turning over at a good rate and you have fuel them it's not getting spark to the engine. So start by opening the distributor cap. Look for cracks, burn marks, chips. Things like that. It's also possible that the coil is dead.
