Question type: Maintenance & Repair
I have a 94 Jeep Cherokee Laredo with a 5.2 that I
just bought. As I was pulling it in the driveway the
transmission started making a banging sound. The
overdrive wasn't working. Now when I start it up all
it does is make noises

I would need to see it to make a valid correct diagnosis. But, it sounds like the faceplate is cracked. That would account for the banging sound. As far as the overdrive not working that's another problem. The overdrive unit is the tail section of the transmission. Inside is a simple stack of friction plates and friction disks. You need a hydraulic press to disassemble the unit. There is a huge spring that applies the pressure to the overdrive clutches. There is a overdrive governor also, but I really doubt that's the problem. My guess is your mileage is around 200 thousand plus on the vehicle. If so it's just time to rebuild the transmission. Yours is an easy one to rebuild. I have done a ton of them. Very basic transmission. Good luck.
Correction that should read flexplate. Typo on my part. Sorry.
