What the heck was that piece of snap ring doing in the tranny pan? when I did a service.

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I did a tranny service on my 1994 Jeep Grand Cherokee LTD 5.2lL, 4WD with 110,000 original miles and found what I think is a big piece of the Overdrive snap ring and a piece of plastic which I think is part of a bushing.

Transmission symptoms are as follows:
No movement in reverse , but if I put it into 4WD low reverse works a very little bit, but not enough to be useful.- just slips mostly
All forward gears work fine - no noises and no slippage
Fluid level is good when warmed up
No leaks
Changed filter and added new fluid

How hard is it to change out the snap ring and bushing.  I have been working on cars since I was 12 with my old man and I'm comfortable with repairs on almost any vehicle.  Do I need to drop the tranny or can the snap ring and bushing be repaired with it still n the vehicle.  Looks like I don't have to open up the transmission, nut I think the parts are located between the transmission and the transfer case.  How am I doing so far.  Please someone advise.

I think it has to come out for a full rebuild an dfix that issue too because the reverse out is the trans internals not the transfer case.
