why does the steering slip while turning left and right in my 1995 jeep Cherokee

Ed is correct. But if you are experiencing "wheel hop" while turning sharply, that is the "all time four wheel drive" making the tires break traction for a second on hard, dry surfaces. "Crow Hop". That's the big drawback of the older systems but it's nothing wrong.
