1996 jeep grand cherokee. speedometer wont work and stuck in limp mode(first gear)

1996 grand Cherokee v8.  driving jeep and go to slow down when you get between 10-15 mph the abs kicks in and the pedal pulsates. the mechanic told me the abs rings on the cv axles were worn and the cv axles needed replaced so he replaced them now the speedometer doesn't work and the vehicle is in limp mode. transmission stuck in 1st gear.

i understand the concept of limp mode and why it happens but can you explain to me why after i had the cv axles changed what could cause the speedometer to stop working and the transmission to go into limp mode.
