AC recharge

Asked by GuruS6H93 Jun 16, 2019 at 11:36 AM about the 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My Jeep AC compressor won’t
engage. I tried jumping the
connection to the compressor.  Does
the refrigerant level have to be exact
for both the low side and high side fir
the compressor to engage or do I
need a new compressor?

No. The low side should be 30 to 45 psi, temp dependent. The high side should be 150 to 225, temp dependent. If the compressor will not start, it could be: low pressure cut off switch is bad, compressor relay/fuse, is bad, defective compressor clutch or not enough freon in the system. Hope this helps.

Most likely just low on 134a (Freon). Low pressure switch locks compressor out. Warm the refrigerant can gently with a hair dryer to push some Freon in while engine is idling. Soon the clutch will click on and you can check your gauge readings until full.
