1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4Dr Laredo Suv...224,000 high way miles. Is it worth buying or should I run away?
This car has 224,000 highway miles. The back seat was never even sat on. They put in a new Transmission but other wise the cars body is in perfect condition and they want $3000 for it. Is it worth it or shoulde I run away fast?
My ex-wife and I bought a 92 Cherokee Sport for $1000 with almost the same mileage in 2004. Factory engine and Tranny. It was in Alberta and the body had significant rust and even leaked around the windshield. Only problem we ever had was the original owner repaired a hose from the transmission to the radiator with reinforced polystyrene. The fluid eventually ate thru this and caused all the fluid to run onto the ground. A half hour fix and more fluid and it was fine. Jeeps hold their value well and go forever. Maybe get the transfer case looked at first. As well as a quick engine check. That year in Alberta goes for almost $13000.
Have the transfer case looked at as well as teh differentials. That is where some 'problems' can be, just from lots of miles. For $3000, that is not a bad deal. Jeeps are solidly built, and hold their value. I know someone with an original transmission in a 92 with over 300,000 miles, and stilling running strong.
you don't know anyone with a 92 grand cherokee. 93 was the first year built. Cherokees have different transmissions also.
It might be worth it...depends. The water pump is likely to go along with the power steering and such. Like said before me, check the diffs and t-case. Also look for carbon build up in the intake. check motor mounts...I'd offer them $2500.

the only thing about a 93' grand cherokee is that some of them have the AW4 transmission instead of the 42re (referring to the 4.0). They hold up better. This trans came in all 93-93.3 grands.
is it the 4.0 or the V8? either way the price is wayyyy too high for the miliage. im not sying it wont run but with that many miles and a potentialy neglegent seller i would beware and deff walk away from this one. $800-$1000 best offer.

$3k is too much. I could find them all day for $1500-$2500 in my area. The one I have now (1995 GC limited) only cost me $600 (200k miles) It needed a water pump, tires, windshield and a little TLC. It looks so nice now, even one person drove by my house and wanted to buy it. ☺
@Toph It might be a 5.9 V8. 98 was the last year of the first generation before they changed the body style. Before they had 5.2 V8 in early to mid 90s models but the last year was a 5.9.
I have a 2002 jeep grand charokee special edition with 152,200 miles for $5000, 4 door, and a 2004 Isuzu Ascender 7 seater 4door for $6000. Personally I think the 1998 is too high plus too many miles regardless if you buy mine or not. I would never pay that much for anything with that many miles. simpsonpandora@yahoo.com...
