There is play in my back wheels.

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

If I put my foot up to my rear wheels and push there is a lot of play. Not in the wheels themselves but the
jeep itself moves.  My jeep rocks back and forth from side to side and there is a clunking sound.  This
does not happen on my front wheels.  I don't remember there being this much play or the clunking sound
before.  Anybody have any thoughts on what this could be and how I can fix this.

You may have bad shocks or a bad wheel bearing and ned to have it replaced ASAP or it may lock up and cause you to reck

This is fairly common in vehicles with semi-float rear axles and more particularly with rear drum brakes. When the vehicle is rocked side to side, the movement causes the rearend to move while the axleshafts, bolted to the wheels via the lug nuts, remain mostly stationary. It is the normal play within the bearings and inherent to the design, somewhat amplified by the brake drums, that causes the clunking. Please, if you suspect any mechanical defect or are concerned that this is a safety issue or just need peace of mind, see a qualified, reputable service tech. for an inspection
