Engine Swap

Asked by wcaudill_05 Aug 02, 2018 at 05:06 PM about the 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 4WD

Question type: General

Can I put a Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo
4.0 4x4 straight 6 engine into a 2004 Jeep
Grand Cherokee 4.7 4x4? Or any Jeep
Cherokee 4.7 of that year?

Based on experience your best way to go is to put a 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4.7 into that 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4.7 needing the engine. Forget the 4.0 liter six because of ECM mismatch. Also, note that in 2003-2004 there were two 4.7 engines. The standard one VIN letter N, and the High Output 4.7 VIN letter J. Don't swap them around. The eighth digit of you VIN identifies the engine.
