Why it idles rough and stalls

Asked by Kristen Feb 06, 2019 at 11:31 PM about the 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee V8 idles very
rough and intermittently stalls out if I’m either
idling or driving under 35 mph. We’ve
replaced O2sensors, fuel pump and filter,
we’ve checked for leaking hoses, I’m at a
loss here and really can’t afford to just keep
buying stuff! I love my Jeeps but I can’t afford
to “Just Empty Every Pocket”! Sometime
when it acts like it’s going to stall the rpms
will jump and the Jeep “jumps” forward to
keep going. I seriously losing my cool!

Have it scanned for codes before buying any more parts. Stalling and jumpy tachometer readings mean failure of the crankshaft position sensor (CPS) or code #0320. This CPS is located near the starter on the 4.7 liter V8 engine. Insert the new CPS to touch the flywheel then back it out 0.030 inches, tighten bolt. To self scan, turn the ignition key from Off to On three times quickly, without starting the engine, stopping at "On". The codes will show at the odometer display. It will show "done" when it's done. Google the codes for information.
