Has my steering pump gone bad or is it just my hose?

Asked by Briana Dec 08, 2015 at 01:18 PM about the 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

have a 2002 Jeep grand cherokee and my
steering wheel wont turn at all!!! Literally
won't budge. Even when my car has heated
it won't turn. I bought power steering fluid to
see if it was that and when I first put it in the
wheel moved perfect. After literally two
minutes the wheel began to get harder to
turn and eventually wouldn't turn at all.
When I looked under my car all of the fluid
had leaked out. I'm a full time student and a
single mom with two jobs. I don't have the
money to get anything major fixed but I
need a vehicle. Someone please tell me
what's wrong!!

Obviously it is a leak as you've discovered. Where it is leaking from you have to determine. The pump may be fine and it's just a hose or fitting leaking. If it's losing all the fluid in two minutes then it's a serious leak. You'll have to get it to a shop to repair it, my suggestion to you is find the closest shop near you, fill the reservoir up and drive it there. If it gets hard to steer pull over and refill the reservoir again. Otherwise you'll have to pay for a tow, if you have towing on your insurance they may cover it. If you have any mechanically inclined friends see if they'll do the work. Look up "power steering components" so you'll have an idea of what the mechanic is talking about. Don't let them sell you an entire new rack and pinion system or even a power steering pump without getting at least a second opinion.
